Pair rich with bright
Deep chocolate and salted caramel make a wonderfully cosy combination. Add fresh berries or a little citrus on the side and you have a bright note to balance every rich, fudgy bite.
If you are serving a generous dinner first, a lighter filling can be just the thing. Whipped cream and fresh fruit keep each slice soft and fresh.
Let the season lead
The best flavours are often the ones that are in season. Strawberries bring a sunny sweetness to vanilla sponge, while a hint of rose and raspberry feels right at home with a cup of tea.
Think about who is joining you, too. A familiar favourite can be a lovely centrepiece when you are sharing with a crowd.
There is no wrong choice
A cake should be a pleasure, not a puzzle. Choose what makes you happy, and if you are torn between two flavours, tell us about your occasion and we can help you decide.
